Our Rescued Lions and Bears

Arthur: Male Black Bear

Arthur, a wild black bear who had been living in a culvert on the Sierra Star golf course in Mammoth, California, was captured by the California Department of Fish & Game after reports that he had been seen hobbling on three legs. He arrived at PAWS on March 5, 2002, after treatment by Fish & Game and UC Davis veterinarians. He is enjoying his grassy area complete with a hot tub, pine trees and honeysuckle vines. He loves food and can be easily coaxed with grapes, apples and oranges (his favorite food so far). Arthur is another sad victim of human encroachment on wildlife.

Boo-Boo: Male Black Bear

Boo-boo was born at a breeder facility and sold at a flea market as a pet for a small child. He was taken from his mother at approximately two weeks old as a cute cuddly baby. His new owners locked a chain around his neck, then lost the key. As Boo-boo matured, the chain grew into his neck 1 1/2 inches. A concerned woman purchased him from the family and paid for a vet to remove the chain, then contacted PAWS. Boo-Boo lives with Winston, another black bear.

Cinnamon: Female Black Bear
Cinnamon arrived with three other bears, Sampson, Oma and Scarface, from the Houston SPCA where they had been temporarily housed after authorities confiscated them from a series of horrendous conditions. Prior to their rescue, all four of the bears were featured as part of a tiny drive-through roadside exhibit. The owner of the dilapidated facility was cited for numerous cruelty violations and the animals were impounded.

Cinnamon & her 3 friends arrived at PAWS in July of 2003.

Denny: Male African Lion

Denny was purchased by a private individual from a pet store when he was a cub. He was brutally declawed, causing permanent damage to all four paws, and defanged. Fortunately for Denny, he was confiscated by the Detroit Police Department's Harbormaster Division on Belle Isle, when they discovered his owner jogging with him in the park. Denny arrived at the Detroit Zoological Park on September 14, 1997. Denny, and another lion - victims of the horrendous trade in exotic animals - were sent to PAWS in December 1997. Denny and Pfeiffer will spend the remainder of their lives in the peaceful surroundings at the PAWS sanctuary.

Manfried: Male Kodiak Bear

According to his former trainer, Manfried was one of the animal stars of "Legends of the Fall... Iron Will" as well as performing in many commercials and wrestling exhibits. When he grew too large, he was left in a small horse trailer, wallowing in his own feces, malnourished and suffering from diarrhea and dehydration. PAWS investigated his plight and took a film crew from National Geographic to document his story. Manfried's home at PAWS is a 14,000 square foot enclosure with trees and a pool.

Samantha: Female Mountain Lion
Samantha was born in a drive-through Safari Park in Arkansas. She was taken from her mother before she was three weeks of age and placed in the "petting zoo" at the park. She was later sold to a visitor who felt sorry for her because she appeared to be starving. Two months later her owners surrendered her to the local humane society because "she was getting out of hand."

The humane society contacted PAWS and Samantha arrived weighing ten pounds, unable to stand on her back legs. Dragging herself by her front legs, the tiny feline was suffering from malnutrition and calcium deficiency. Samantha has since improved on a balanced diet and calcium supplements. She bounds around her enclosure and chases her boomer ball, unaware that a few years ago she was unable to walk. Her story exemplifies a pervasive problem in this country -- excessive breeding of exotic animals which contributes to the continued surplus of captive species whose rightful place is in the wild.
